Salvador Dalí (1904–1989) brought his distinctive Surrealist imagination to jewellery, transforming motifs such as eyes, lips, hearts and animals into precious objects. From the 1940s, he designed a remarkable series of jewels, many executed by goldsmith Carlos Alemany, including The Eye of Time, Ruby Lips and The Royal Heart. Dalí also collaborated with leading figures in fashion and jewellery, notably Elsa Schiaparelli, with whom he created celebrated Surrealist designs including the 1937 Lobster Dress, and jeweller Fulco di Verdura. His work blurred the boundaries between fine art, fashion and jewellery, treating wearable objects as another medium for Surrealism.
